Broken Wing was written by Richie Beirach for a recording with Chet Baker. It featured Paul Desmond, Michael Brecker and John Scofield... First it was released as an album with only four songs, slickly produced and packaged. But afterwards it was released as a double cd with lots of nice additions.
Anyway, Chet played it hundreds of times afterwards, because the melody and harmony is just so beautiful.
The harmony of the tune is pretty straightforward.
The first four bars are in Gminor, the second four bars set up for Falt going to Bbm.
The third group of four bars are largely Bbm. The last four bars surround the Dbmaj tonal centre, which is... Bbm.
Funny thing is that the song ends in Falt and that chord just really wants to go to Bbm. Instead, it goes to Gm.
That is so cool!
You should definitely check out Richie's original changes. Has a lot more harmony going on. Definitely for accomplished players.
Thing is, the melody and harmony are just so beautiful. I just want to play it, limited skill or not.
Here you can find the file (mgu file) for the tune. Remember, the file wants to play a Jazzstylezz style. If you don't have styles from Jazzstylezz, you can use another style that you like.
