Horizontal Song (Jon Balke)

Jon Balke released the album Further in 1994. An album of different colors and styles, sometimes a little too free for me. But the first tracks that open up the album are just wonderful.

The tune Horizontal Song has this haunting melody and quirky harmony. The first part is based on Lydian and lydian dominant harmony. The second part (after an interlude without written melody) is fascinating in its' chromaticism.

I think there's more to the harmony than I understand, but nevertheless, it's great playing.

The descending melody is embellished with a constant structure underneath (al

ways a major third lower than the next melody note).

I love the tune, and love to present it to you in this way.

As always, you can download the tune HERE. If you load it and you don't have the appropriate Jazzstylezz style, it will say "style missing". But you can always substitute it with any other style of your liking.

Dig it.
